No Fear

First up, my sincerest apologies for the gap in articles, fear not though, this is not another indication of a flash disappearance on my part, I simply went home to celebrate my 23rd birthday. At home I gathered some books, of which I currently have at least one hundred at last count, among them a very important book to my heart, and one I believe every ‘Cane fan should own: ‘Cane Mutiny: How the Hurricanes Overturned the Football Establishment by Bruce Feldman.

To ‘Canes fans of yore, be prepared to not only be taken on a trip through the history you know so well, but to get an inside look at many things you didn’t know, and probably should to see the whole picture that is the U. For those of you like myself, who only got to experience bits and pieces of the first half of the Hurricane dynasty, and reveled in the short lived second half, this book should be a real eye opener.

2009 Schedule Breakdown Part 2

You’re about to find out exactly why I split the season in “half” as I did. After the Oklahoma game Miami plays FAMU....and they win. Well, they win and are treated to one of the most brilliant half time shows known to college football. I still have memories from the last time they came to the Orange Bowl, and pretty much embarrassed our poor band of the hour. There was our band, center field, spelling out USA in tight cursive (we didn’t have enough members for anything more than that), and there’s the FAMU band, lined up along the entire sideline....the whole field. They step in, form an outline around our band in the shape of the entire United States, and yes, we get it, our band of the hour really wasn’t what it used to be. In all honesty though, the only way FAMU could ever beat Miami is if there are multiple injuries in every key position. The difference in talent is just too great. If Miami scores fewer than 50 points, prepare to be shocked, a final score of 56-7 is what I'm going with.

APR

APR, aka the Academic Progress Rate, is another bloated NCAA statistic that basically boils down to graduation percentage of schools within all of their athletic squads. These numbers were released May 1st, and essentially continue to prove how ludicrous the accusations coming from a select few “haters” remaining out there in college football fandom truly are, in reference to Miami’s past.

You might have seen, probably have heard about it, and I, most definitely, have mentioned it; the Hurricanes face what is probably one of the hardest gauntlets to start a season off ever. We return, again, to the road of having to face our number one in state foe, all for the sake of TV ratings. Alas, such is college football. That wasn’t enough, though, for the football gods. We then host Georgia Tech, who the Hurricanes haven’t beaten in the last four tries, take a road trip into Blacksburg to have at it with defending ACC Champs Virginia Tech, and the cherry on top, we have the pleasure of hosting Oklahoma. Oh, and by the way, our bye week is the second one of the season, so after facing our rival, and having a break, we face 11 straight weeks of football.

Recruiting and Winning

With two soft commitments, thirteen commits leaning towards Miami, and sixteen others also considering the Hurricanes, it doesn’t look like Shannon’s recruiting efforts will slow down at all. In fact, looking down the list, at least ten of those fifteen leaning towards Miami look like sure gets, be they long time Miami fans, or Miami Northwestern players. Having finished with a “paltry” six ESPN Top 150 recruits, one year after nabbing twelve of them, getting the #1 class ranking for 2008, the prospect of even more talent coming in should excite Canes fans.

Spring Preview: Part 1 Offense

Everyone wants to get excited. A new quarterback who looked good last year in his limited playing time. A new offensive coordinator who should have us averaging thirty to forty points a game. It's all been heard before, and honestly, Hurricanes fans are a bit skeptical, and apathetic, towards any of this news. Still though, we're a bit excited. Here are a few reasons you should be if you're not already.
