 Images from the Houston@Miami game:
I don't understand; even with the 31 put up by Louisville, our defense is giving up an average of about 16.5 points per game, and yet we're 2-2 and out of the top 25. Someone explain to me why Miami can't average 21 points a game to come out on top? I'm beginning to wonder about Kyle Wright’s abilities to adapt. There's no questioning his raw talent, as UM's first drives seem to indicate, he can orchestrate a scoring drive just like Ken Dorsey could. The kind of scoring drive that not only produces a touchdown, but puts a fear into the other team with the seeming ease that it was brought about.
I don't know whether to fully blame Kyle on this, or perhaps poor coaching, but there is no denying that in some situations, a smarter quarterback, or at least one who is more focused, could have won us some games. The most frustrating thing is how talented this team is. Raw talent like Lance Legget, and Javarris James, this team is reminiscent of 2001 with a stingy defense and talent on offense like James' cousin Edgerrin, but the missing link is a leader, the quarterback.
Once again, more then half the points scored on the defense were short field and off of turnovers, 10 of Houston's 13 point this time. Once again Miami comes on the field like a bat out of hell, and then shoots itself in the foot with a turnover on its subsequent drive, and failing to score for the rest of the half. Thank god they found a semblance of an offense in the second half, recovering in time to edge past a 4-0 Houston team.
It was very sad actually, Houston should have had no chance to win, with only one or two really sustained drives of 60 yards or more. Miami seems to have an issue with finishing off drives. You cannot average over 350 yards in two games and only come up with 10.5 points a game. Pulling in over 400 against Houston and only having 14 points to show for it is just ridiculous. Sadly, I don't think Miami will be entering the ACC championship game if they can't figure this out. You can't ride your defense against teams like Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, you'll just get embarrassed like at Louisville.
The one bright point of this game is Miami has found it's two stars on offense, if only Kyle could get the ball to them all the time. Lance Legget should have gotten the ball more, and we'd probably have more points if he had, but as it stands he had 2 catches for 72 yards, and Javarris was even more spectacular. This kid comes into the game, only known because of his cousin, and he racks up 148 yards on 18 carries (for an average of 8.2 yards), and even caught the ball twice for 22 yards. In his first start, James had a total of 170 yards, not too bad. Hopefully with your stars set, you can start to establish a rhythm in offense over the next three games, bring back the Miami everyone fears.
Speaking of stars, Greg Olsen needs to be benched for a game, get his head straight. When you're the safety blanket for a quarterback, you can't drop balls, and most definitely can't tip a ball into the hands of the defense. Sit him, let him stew for a bit, plus Farr looked decent on the field, and caught both balls thrown to him.
Okay here's the final box score:
