It's finally midway through the season for the Hurricanes (finally having played and fought through their 6th game), and their record stands at 4-2, a number which most fans scoff at. We should actually be thanking our defense right now, because without them we could easily be 1-5, but this isn't much hope for a team whos yearly aspiration is to win the National Title. For weeks now Miami has been sniffing at the top 25, but until some more teaup there lose second and third games, especially after the fight, Miami will probably stay out of the top 25 the remainder of the season. That is of course unless it figures out a way to get its hands on the ACC title. Fight or not, voters wouldn't be able to deny Miami a position in the top 25 if they can manage that.
We all know what Miami has done, and what Miami will have to do in order to even reach the ACC championship game, win out. What, though, is the state of the rest of college football? For this article, I'm going to focus on the poll voters inability to grasp a week to week situation, instead basing their polls not only on previous weeks, but also on pre season polls. When a team losses, no matter how high its ranking, it obviously wasn't as good as you may have thought. There may be extenuating circumstances, like LSU's loss to Auburn, but there is no excuse for keeping Texas in the top 10.
But Jason they've only lost one game. Sure, but so have Auburn, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Florida, California, Clemson and Georgia Tech, some of whoms one loss was far less embarrassing then Texas' home loss against OSU 24-7. This, coupled with the fact that besides OSU the only other team Texas has played is Oklahoma, which everyone can admit is not the same team without a quarter back, and that Adrian Peterson can only do so much (although he's out now so I'd be surprised if Oklahoma could win any games here on out), and Texas doesn't really look so much like a top ten team. I could name 12 teams, most of which I've already mentioned, that deserve to be ahead of Texas, and one undefeated team sitting right behind them in the polls, Louisville, who definitely deserves to be ahead of them.
Other inconsistancies including one poll still keeping USC ahead of Michigan. I'm not denying that USC has won it's games, and that this wasn't a difficult thing, but the ease with which Michigan has been winning it's games, against more superior opponents, makes USC's #2 ranking inexusable (and someone please explain to me why they have the highest computer rankings in the BCS poll).
The most glaring inconsistancy is how quickly, or not, a team is thrown out of the top 25. Now I understand Miami's record of 1-2 warrented such an expulsion, but how about Oklahoma 's 4-2 record, losing to both ranked teams they played, or LSU's 5-2 record, also losing to both ranked teams it's played? I'm sorry but if your only victories are against cannon fodder, then you don't deserve a top 25 ranking with plenty of quality teams below you that have, like Arkansas, Texas A&M.
What I've gathered from the midpoint of the season is that the new clock rules suck, totally eliminating the 2 minute drill for comeback victories (rare this year), the pollsters really need to evaluate their system of voting, and Miami needs to keep winning just to keep hopes alive. Done and done.
