Photos from the Miami @ Georgia Tech game:
It's official, the fates are against the Miami Hurricanes, and poor coach Larry Coker. We were too good, for too long, and we all knew this would happen, just not in our lifetime. How else can you explain what has happened this year? Loss number 1 saw a total of 3 rushing yards, possibly one of the lowest combined rushing totals in NCAA history, in one of the ugliest games ever to be played. Loss number 2 saw Miami up a touchdown on the road against a ranked opponent. With the ball on the six yard line, Miami poised to go up 14-0 barely halfway into the first quarter, they fumble and don't score another point the remainder of the game. Now, this happens? Miami had more first downs then GaTech, more yards, and seven minutes advantage on Time of Possesion, and still found a way to lose by 7, giving up 17 points in the fourth quarter, but it was more then just a simple loss. Travis Bell, GaTech's kicker, had been struggling all year, especially with field goals beyond 30 yards, where he was 3/8 for the year, and all of a sudden the guy can't miss, going 3/3 on the day, all over 30 yards each.
Again the Hurricanes were plagued by penalties, only 8 for 72 yards this game, stalling two drives, and reversing many others. Despite all this though, Miami had the game in hand, up 16-13 in the fourth quarter. GaTech was driving, threatening to take the lead, but the drive stalled, and then something happened that would change the whole course of the game. Reggie Ball took the snap, looked downfield and threw a pass towards the right side of the endzone. Merriweather, who had been covering Calvin Johnson all day, broke deep after the ball, interception in his mind. He caught the ball just outside the endzone, and bobbled a bit. He then secured the ball on his shoulder with both hands, took two steps in bounds, fell out and had the ball come out after contact with the ground out of bounds. The initial call was incomplete, and GaTech players rushed to set up and get a play off. No call came from the replay booth above, and with only one timeout left, Larry hesitated too long to make the call and throw the red flag.
Video evidence clearly showed Merriweather gathering the ball and staying in bounds for two steps before having the ground out of bounds cause the fumble, clear indications of a catch and interception. The upstairs booth, and Miami coaches, failed to catch this, and after a short running play, Travis bell kicked his third and final field goal of the day to tie the game up. So instead of the ball on the twenty yard line, with just under 15 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but 16-13, Miami was now tied 16 all and left in doubt once again as to their fate. Even to the end, when Miami fumbled the punt with 17 seconds left in the game , squelching all hope of a comeback, one could see the fates working against a Miami team in disarray.
All stats, Kyle Wright lead in passing, Javarris James lead in rushing, and Greg Olsen lead in recieving, all offensive statistical catagories had finally fallen Miami's way against a ranked opponent, and still fate found fit to have them lose. More penalties for more stalled drives, a kicker who misses being perfect on the day, a missed call that should have been an interception, and of course a 4-1 turnover ratio in favor of GaTech. The beginning of the game couldn't have been scripted better for Miami, first play, sack fumble touchdown, just like that in less then 15 seconds. The end of the day would see Miami again dejected, looking around for answers and not finding them anywhere.
