The weekend started off with an explosion that left the ACC questioning whether or not it had a dominant figure, something it hasn't seen since Miami, VaTech, and Boston College entered the picture. By the third quarter of this game, VaTech, on a thursday night in Blacksburg, had finished it's dismantling of the dominant power in the ACC, #10 Clemson. Shockingly, they held the #1 offense in the ACC to only seven points. The stats, once you delve deeper, are even more shocking, and portent to a team that was unprepared rather then overmatched. There is no way a team averaging over 420 yards per game could just all of a sudden manage only 166. This is not VaTech facing some bottom of the barrel team, whose offensive prowess was earned against cannon fodder, this is VaTech facing Clemson, the vaunted offense with a rushing duo that would scare the crap out of even Texas.
Somehow, though, Virginia Tech held Clemson to 80 yards rushing, and more impressive was the 86 yards passing given up by the Hokie defense. To seal the win offensively, VaTech didn't need to look further then Branden Ore, who 203 yards on 37 carries, and 2 of VaTech's 3 touchdowns. Football weekend had barely started, and already the biggest upset fathomable had occurred...right?
Saturday was a day to be feared for many top ranked teams, and a few rank hopefuls, like Miami. The saturday before halloween indeed lived up to the hype. First the scares:
Michigan struggled to find it's offense against Northwestern, pulling out a mildly acceptable 17-3 victory, but only leading 10-0 at halftime. At least they lead the whole game.
Which cannot be said for Texas, who, for the second straight week, had to come from behind to win a game. This time the whole was a bit deeper then one point, but luckily they had the entire game to make it up. After just one quarter Texas Tech had put up 21 points on Texas and looked poised to pull off the upset of the weekend. With a 31-21 halftime lead, Texas Tech need only keep on scoring to fend off Texas. Unfortunately that was exactly what they didn't do. A pair of touchdowns, one in the third, and one in the fourth, gave Texas a 35-31 lead, which they were able to hold, barely escaping once again.
Auburn doesn't seem capable of proving itself to the media. It'll have, on the whole, fantastic days against ranked teams, and have the toughest mentality, but seems unable to prepare for games against mediocre opponents. A 23-17 victory over 2-7 Mississippi is evidence to that. Hint to Auburn, if you want to move up in the polls, win big against teams with more then 6 losses.
Tennessee needed a 17 point fourth quarter to pull a victory away from the ole ball coach and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Not a very impressive victory, but unlike other teams (read above) the Gamecocks are above .500 (5-3 after the loss), so for this week Tennessee, you're safe, but don't go expecting us to be lenient again.
Florida was able to scoot past Georgia 21-14 with a touchdown in each of the first three quarters. Georgia tried to make it a game scoring a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters, but too little too late.
Wisconsin was down 24-10 to lowly Illinois at halftime, and needed ten points in the third, and another ten in the fourth to pull out a 30-24 victory. Lucky for the Badger offense the D held a shutout the second half, allowing for the comeback to even occur.
I don't know what to call the Oklahoma-Missouri game, because honestly I had picked Missouri to edge past an Oklahoma team without a clear leader. I'm going to have to give the Sooners credit though, they just keep on winning, against all odds. 26-10 victory, you officially have my respect, if that matters at all.
Georgia Tech needed a miracle day from their kicker, and quite a few interventions from fate (a missed interception call comes to mind) to pull out a 31-24 victory.
Wake, trying to prove it belonged, needed 10 fourth quarter points to beat 2- 7 UNC. Hint to wake, score more against the teams you're supposed to beat. You guys should go to the conference about winning I'm sending the Aurburn players to.
Finally, Texas A&M had to outlast Baylor 31-21, gaining over 500 yards in offense in the process. Tied 21 all in the third, the Aggies needed a 10 point fourth quarter rally to pull this one out.
So another week, another gamut of near misses, and the top 25 survives yet again.....WRONG. This is the saturday before halloween kiddies, prepare for your worst nightmare, Big Upsets Against Unranked Teams!
We'll start with the biggest blowout, but the least surprising. Nebraska falls to Oklahoma State 41-29. The game started off innocent enough, with Nebraska pulling ahead 10-0 after the first, and things looking as they should be. Scoring another 13 points in the second, though, was necessary, as the defense let OSU get 20 of their own. The third quarter held steady, and Nebraska looked as if it might pull the game out, defensively of course. Then came the fourth quarter, and the beginning of Nebraska's nightmare. Before it was all over the Cowboy's had put up another 21 points, holding Nebraska to one touchdown, and a missed extra point. With over 900 yards gained by the two teams, neither defense really had much to be proud of leaving the stadium, although the Cowboy's heads were a bit higher, they had just pulled off the upset.
This was nothing to compare what was happening on the west coast, where USC was in a battle for it's life. Every time you changed the channel to look in on them, the situation seemed to be getting worse, and then USC hit rock bottom. There was 4:51 left in the third, and Oregon State, yes the 4-3 Oregon State Beavers, had just kicked a field goal. You look up to the scoreboard and see something that just might have shocked you: Oregon State-33 USC-10 USC did manage to make things interesting, coming back to withing 33-31, but down two, they needed the two point conversion, and failed. This after already getting their first 2-point conversion in on the first touchdown of the fourth quarter.
So, USC, the team that was supposed to face the victor of the Michigan-Ohio State match up (see match-up of the century), has no fallen, and the most intriguing development of the year has surfaced. With no one loss team really proving much to the voters right now, if the OSU-Michigan game is close enough, could we see them play each other again for the championship? No doubt the polls would move Michigan down a notch or two after the loss, but if it's no lower then 3-4, the BCS scores may still put them in ahead of say and undefeated #2 Louisville or West Virginia. Chew on that for a week. I'll see you next time, in Week in Review. |
