Despite what was quite posisbly one of the worst seasons in recent history for the University of Miami, one streak still lives on. For the 13th straight year the Hurricanes had at least one first round draft choice in the NFL draft. In fact, they had three go in the first round bringing the total number in the past 13 years to 32 total players, 24 since the 2001 draft. The closest record behind Miami is the Florida Gators who had a string of 8 years (1983-91). The streak started with the selection of Warren Sapp in 1995 as the 12th pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In this years draft Brandon Merriweather (S) was the first to be selected as the 24th pick by the New England Patriots. Right on his heals was Jon Beason (LB) picked up by the Carolina Panthers. Lastly, Greg Olsen (TE) was taken by the Chicago Bears as the 31st pick. "It's a great honor for the University of Miami because we set the bar high," said UM head coach Randy Shannon. "It means a lot to the university because we are a family and this is a unique place. A streak this long means we've had a lot of really good players come through here. But, to me, to have players drafted in the first round and to have them already graduated, that's what is really important. We pride ourselves on being the best we can be on and off the field, and this is another example of that."
